Both are taught from scratch, in groups by level, several times a week. BJJ is the martial art in which a smaller person can control a bigger one through technique and leverage, with no striking. Your first lesson is free.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you to control and submit an opponent on the ground through position and leverage, not strength. There's no striking, so you can learn safely even if you've never done a contact sport. The first weeks are about basic positions and how to escape them; fitness comes with training.
Gi is trained in a kimono: gripping the fabric makes the game slower and more tactical, which is great for learning control. No-Gi is trained in a rashguard, gripping the body, at a faster pace, closer to grappling and MMA. Many members combine the two; the membership covers both.
In BJJ, progress is marked by belts: white, blue, purple, brown and black, with stripes in between. The coach looks at your technique, your consistency and how you apply what you've learned, and every step is a concrete goal.
